As you are probably aware, Florida is one of the world’s top retirement destinations for both American citizens and international buyers. The climate is certainly a factor: summer highs tend to average around 81 and the annual low is normally around 60 degrees. The cost of living is low (as are most state-level taxes), and there are plenty of fun activities to fill your days with.

I feel obligated to preface this article with a disclaimer. As many economists will attest to: "Value is Subjective". The 'best' or 'worst' place to retire will ultimately depend upon your personal preferences. What means the most to you? What do you, your friends and/or family like to do for fun?
Regardless, there is something in Florida for everyone. Do you enjoy the Great Outdoors? Visit one of Florida's 663 miles of coastal beaches! Culinary exploration is also available especially around large population centers such as the Tampa, Miami, and Jacksonville metropolitan areas. Florida's got racetracks and casinos if that's up your alley... or there are plenty of other musical and theatrical events happening year-round in the state.
A recent article in Southern Living picked several areas we are intimately familiar with here at Dreamscape Realty, ie. Boca Raton and Fort Myers. Others that made the list include Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. (Apparently their list seemed to be concentrated around either Southeast or Southwest Florida!) However, I have personally received glowing reports from friends who live near Pensacola & St. Augustine as well. It is tough to go wrong when deciding where you would like to make your mark in the Sunshine State.
Planes, Trains, & Automobiles: A plethora of Florida Travel Options
Boating remains a popular transportation and leisure option. This bridge between Fort Myers Beach and Bonita Springs is a very popular spot!
When it comes to getting to Florida: Where there is a will, there is a way! Easy access to air travel makes visits from friends or relatives a breeze; Florida is served by virtually every airline in the country and boasts 12 international airports including Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. Low-cost carrier flights are available to travelers on a budget as well; these may even fly to smaller markets around the state such as Punta Gorda or Fort Myers.
The state of Florida is also home to three of the country’s longest roads. Interstate 10 begins in Jacksonville and stretches across the panhandle, traversing the entire southern United States and ending on the west coast in Los Angeles. Interstate 75 runs from Fort Lauderdale across what’s known as “Alligator Alley” before traversing Florida’s Gulf Coast, allowing easy access to destinations such as Fort Myers, Tampa-St. Pete, and Ocala. (Keep heading North and you can get as far as Michigan without changing interstates!). Finally, Interstate 95 runs from Miami along the eastern coast of Florida and all the way up to Maine.
3 Florida Destinations to Consider
There are so many hidden treasures to discover during your time in Florida. Whether you are moving to the state or just visiting, consider checking out some of these areas during your time here.
The Southeastern coast of Florida boasts the neighboring towns of Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Boca is known for its plethora of parks, beaches, and excellent golf courses. The downtown Boca area also has some fantastic choices for both fine dining and live music. Delray is a small city with fantastic art galleries, restaurants, nightclubs, and a lively beachfront; Boca Raton is much larger and has all the amenities and shopping you’ll need to get settled. Tough to make the wrong choice when these are your options!
Located in central-south Florida, the international vacation destination of Orlando offers something for everyone. Theme parks like Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios offer plenty of thrills for kids and adults alike. An array of excellent hospitality choices, nightlife and live entertainment options mean you’ll never get bored. (I personally recommend checking out the shopping & entertainment district in Disney Springs. I saw one of my favorite bands at the House of Blues musical venue on that property last year. It was quite a treat.)
